5-Day Rhinos, Diamonds & Okavango Delta
This small group overland tour with camping accommodations offers insights into Botswana’s culture, history, and premier safari destinations. The journey takes you from Gaborone to Maun on a budget, with easy and affordable access from Johannesburg (by plane or bus). Along the way, visit the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, the Orapa Diamond Museum, Makgadikgadi National Park, and the Okavango Delta. All activities and transfers are included, and this tour can be done in reverse, starting in Maun and ending in Gaborone or Johannesburg.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN GABORONE (-/-/-)
Upon arrival at the airport, a warm welcome awaits as we transfer you to your accommodation in Gaborone (included). Take the opportunity to relax and unwind from your journey, preparing for the exciting adventures ahead.
DAY 2: GABORONE CITY TOUR & KHAMA RHINO SANCTUARY (B/L/D)
After breakfast, your adventure begins with a cultural and historical tour of Gaborone, guided by a local expert. Highlights include the Three Chiefs Monument, the government enclave, and the vibrant Gaborone Main Mall street market. Visit the Thabong Visual Art Centre and drive through Old Naledi Township before enjoying lunch at Botswana Craft. In the afternoon, depart Gaborone for Serowe, where you’ll set up camp in the tranquil bush of Khama Rhino Sanctuary.
DAY 3: KHAMA RHINO SANCTUARY & DIAMOND MUSEUM (B/-/-)
Rise early for a 4×4 tour through the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, where you may spot these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Following breakfast at the Community Trust restaurant, travel to the Orapa area. Set up camp and enjoy the chance to order lunch before entering the restricted mining area. A mining worker will provide a brief introduction, after which you can explore the fascinating Diamond Museum.
DAY 4: GAME DRIVE IN MAKGADIKGADI NATIONAL PARK (B/L/-)
After breakfast, continue your journey to Makgadikgadi National Park. Enjoy a scenic drive along the Boteti River channel, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. Note that today’s game drive will not include a visit to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, but during the January-April period, there’s a chance to witness the Great Zebra Migration. After a full day of exploration, continue to Maun.
DAY 5: EXPLORING THE OKAVANGO DELTA (B/L/-)
Spend the entire day immersed in the beauty of the Okavango Delta. Begin with a morning speedboat cruise to the Buffalo Fence (or travel by 4×4 if necessary). Meet your poler, who will guide you through the delta’s channels in a traditional mokoro canoe. Enjoy the serene surroundings before stopping for a picnic lunch on one of the islands. Following lunch, partake in a walking safari before another mokoro excursion returns you to the buffalo fence. From there, enjoy a transfer back to Maun, where the tour concludes.
