5-Day Rhinos, Diamonds & Okavango Delta
This small group overland tour, featuring camping accommodations, offers insights into Botswana’s culture, history, and premier safari destinations. The journey takes you from Gaborone to Maun on a budget, with Gaborone easily accessible from Johannesburg (by plane or bus). Along the way, visit the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, the Orapa Diamond Museum, Makgadikgadi National Park, and the Okavango Delta. All activities and transfers are included, and the tour can be conducted in reverse, starting in Maun and ending in Gaborone or Johannesburg.
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN GABORONE (-/-/-)
Upon arrival at the airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your accommodation in Gaborone (included). Take this time to relax and unwind from your journey, preparing for the adventures that lie ahead.
DAY 2: GABORONE CITY TOUR & ONWARD TO KHAMA RHINO (B/L/D)
After breakfast, a local guide will meet you at your accommodation for a 3-hour cultural and historical tour of the capital city. Begin at the Three Chiefs Monument, then explore the government enclave, mingle with locals at the Gaborone Main Mall street market, and visit the Thabong Visual Art Centre. After a final stop at Botswana Craft for lunch, depart Gaborone in the afternoon for Serowe, where you’ll set up camp in the bush of Khama Rhino Sanctuary.
DAY 3: KHAMA RHINO SANCTUARY & DIAMOND MUSEUM (B/-/-)
Rise early at 6:00 AM for a 4×4 tour of the Khama Rhino Sanctuary. After your morning drive, enjoy breakfast at the Community Trust restaurant before heading to the Orapa area. Set up camp and have the chance to order lunch before entering the restricted mining area. A mining worker will provide a short introduction to the area, followed by your exploration of the Diamond Museum.
DAY 4: GAME DRIVE IN MAKGADIKGADI NATIONAL PARK (B/L/-)
Following breakfast, travel to Makgadikgadi National Park. Drive along the channel of the Boteti River, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. Note that today’s game drive will focus on Makgadikgadi National Park rather than the salt pans. During the months of January to April, you may have the opportunity to witness the Great Zebra Migration. Continue your journey to Maun in the afternoon.
DAY 5: EXPLORING THE CHANNELS OF THE OKAVANGO DELTA (B/L/-)
Spend the day immersed in the beauty of the Okavango Delta. Start your adventure with a 1-hour speedboat cruise to the Buffalo Fence (or a 4×4 drive if conditions require). At the Buffalo Fence, meet your poler, who will guide you through the channels of the delta. Born and raised in the Okavango, your guides are passionate and knowledgeable about their home. Enjoy the peace of the delta in a traditional mokoro canoe, stopping for a picnic lunch on one of the islands. After lunch, embark on a walking safari, followed by another mokoro excursion back to the Buffalo Fence. Conclude your adventure with a transfer back to Maun, where the tour ends.
This 5-day tour provides an incredible opportunity to experience the rich culture and stunning landscapes of Botswana while exploring its renowned wildlife and natural wonders.
